A Global Urbanist’s Vision for KL: TAPiO Discusses Sustainable Future with Mayor Maimunah
It was with great honour that TAPiO Management Advisory engaged in a meaningful and insightful dialogue during a recent courtesy call with YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr.) Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the esteemed Mayor of Kuala Lumpur. The meeting was a profound opportunity to connect with a leader whose influence on urban development is recognised not only in Malaysia but across the globe. Our delegation was led by Mr Bernhard Schutte, the Chairman of TAPiO Management Advisory, who also serves as the Ambassador of the World Economic Council (WEC) and Director of its South East Asia Chapter. Key members of our leadership team joined him, Mr Thomas Bernthaler, Mr Heng Siang Tan, and Ms Carmen Lee, all of whom were inspired by the depth and clarity of the discussion.
We were particularly privileged to receive insights from a leader of such distinguished calibre. Mayor Maimunah’s tenure as the former Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) provides her with a unique and invaluable global perspective, which she now brings to the stewardship of our capital city. Her professional journey, rooted in her expertise as a town planner, informs a vision that is both pragmatic and profoundly ambitious. Her concept of Kuala Lumpur as a “city for all” is not merely a slogan, but a philosophy forged through years of championing sustainable and equitable urbanisation on the world stage. This commitment was palpable as she articulated her goals for Kuala Lumpur to become an internationally competitive, inclusive, resilient, and highly liveable metropolis for every one of its inhabitants.
The core of our discussion centred on the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040 (KLSP 2040), the city’s comprehensive blueprint for its future. We explored potential avenues for collaboration where TAPiO Management Advisory could lend its support and expertise. The conversation naturally gravitated towards areas of mutual passion, including sustainable development, social inclusivity, and forward-thinking urban innovation. It was deeply encouraging to see the strong alignment between the city’s strategic objectives and TAPiO’s own commitment to fostering progressive and sustainable growth. The dedication of the Mayor’s entire team was evident, reflecting a shared enthusiasm for building a better city.
The meeting reinforced our belief in the power of collaborative leadership. The open and forward-thinking atmosphere fostered by Mayor Maimunah and her team creates a fertile ground for impactful public-private partnerships. We look forward to a close and productive working relationship, contributing our strategic advisory services and international network to support this visionary direction. We extend our sincerest gratitude to YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr.) Maimunah Mohd Sharif and her team for their time and for sharing their powerful vision. It is a privilege to support their mission, and we are optimistic about the remarkable future that awaits Kuala Lumpur under such capable leadership.
TAPiO Management Advisory, in alignment with the World Economic Council, looks forward to continued collaboration with YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr.) Maimunah Mohd Sharif and her team.
